When a homeowner searches "roofer near me," Google shows a map and three businesses before any regular results. That box is the Map Pack, and for most home service searches it gets the majority of the calls. Google says plainly how it picks those three: relevance, distance, and prominence.
1. Relevance: does your profile match the search?
Relevance is how well your Google Business Profile matches what the homeowner typed. The biggest lever is your primary category. A plumber listed as "Plumber" will beat one listed as "Contractor" for plumbing searches almost every time.
- Set the most specific primary category for your main service
- Add secondary categories only for work you actually do
- List every service with a short, plain description
- Make sure your website service pages use the same words
2. Distance: where is the searcher?
Distance is how close you are to the person searching. You cannot move your address, but you can set an honest service area and build a page on your website for each city you serve. That gives Google a reason to show you outside your immediate neighborhood.
3. Prominence: how well known are you?
Prominence is how established your business looks online. Reviews matter most here: how many you have, how recent they are, and whether you respond. Consistent business listings across directories, local links, and real activity on your profile all add to it.
- Ask for a review after every finished job
- Respond to every review, good or bad
- Post a new project photo every week
- Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere online
What you can control this month
Categories, services, photos, posts, and review responses can all change in a single afternoon. Prominence builds over months, but it compounds. The contractors who stay in the top three are the ones who treat their profile like a storefront, not a listing they set up once and forgot.
